Robin Givens Speaks to the Nation About Domestic Violence

Tyson’s former wife Robin Givens has recently been speaking across the US to promote domestic violence awareness.

“Mike Tyson and Robin Givens were married on Feb. 7, 1988 — eight months of public squabbling and, Robin claims, private beatings — she filed for divorce and Tyson countersued to have the marriage annulled. Each accused the other of vile things.

She said he had made her life “pure hell” and that she was now afraid to be in his presence. He said that she (along with her mother, Ruth Roper) had tried to manipulate him, had “falsely” claimed that she was pregnnant with his child in order to pressure him into marriage, had tried to alienate him from his old friends and from Black people in general, and had tried in various ways to get a hefty slice of his estimated $55 million fortune.” (Ebony)

CNN reports “Guest host Joy Behar talks with actress Robin Givens, Denise Brown and other panelists about their experiences with domestic abuse.”

Robin Givens has drawn recent media attention by speaking out against the Chris Brown v Rihanna domestic violence allegations. According to Bukisa.com, “She said that there are similarities between her own story of domestic violence and those of others and she called them ‘amazing’.

‘I find that my story is their story, their story is my story-down the details’, she said. ‘He dragged me down the hall by my hair. He pulled me out of bed by my panties. He would like to choke me. He would kick’, Givens revealed.”

Her advice to Rihanna: Get out now.

“The Rihanna-Chris Brown story took center stage in the entertainment circle during the past few days with their domestic violence controversy. Rihanna is a popular singer and model from Barbados. She also serves as the cultural ambassador of Barbados and the first Barbadian artist to win a Grammy Award.

Chris Brown, 19 has been charged with two felonies after allegedly punching, choking and biting Rihanna, 21, on the day of the Grammy Awards. Brown turned himself in to the Los Angeles police and was released on a $50 thousand bail.” (Leo Reyes)

Givens has recently joined forces with the domestic violence group STAND! for this latest lecture tour.

“STAND! Against Domestic Violence provides essential domestic violence services to the residents of Contra Costa County, California. Formerly Battered Women’s Alternatives, STAND! began more than 30 years ago as a group of concerned citizens dedicated to serving battered women and their children. The organization has evolved to provide comprehensive services to halt, heal and prevent abuse.”
