Dow Chemical Company Gives Grants to Local Non-Profit Organizations

This is Dow Chemical’s 4th year operating the Community Advisory Panel (CAP). The program is designed to enrich local non-profit organizations through business grants. This year there were a total of 4 companies that were chosen to receive grants. The program has seen an impressive 28% increase in participant applications within the last year. This year Dow had over 50 applicants apply for the business grants.

The grants range from around $2,600 to $5,100. Total grant giving is expected to be in excess of $15,000. This year’s proud recipients include Marine Science Institute, Pittsburg High School, The Gardens at Heather Farm, and The Delta Science Center at Big Break.

Marine Science Institute proudly offers Discovery Voyages in the San Joaquin River-Delta area. These voyages provide students with a better understanding of vital freshwater ecosystems. The Gardens at Heather Farm, was created just before 1969, the gardens are a really nice place that the young, old, and all students of life can enjoy. The Delta Science Center at Big Break, encourages all society to appreciate, understand, and become active stewards of the Delta ecosystem. They rightfully contend that the Delta ecosystem is one of California’s most treasured assets.

In order to qualify for the program organization must prove non-profit status by having a 501(c) designation filed with the State. Dow representatives said that they look for organizations that will, “improve the environment, support hands-on science and math learning, and contribute to the community’s success in the areas of educational opportunities and environmental protection”.

Dow’s charitable efforts are not just local. The CAP program (or programs like it) have been instituted by Dow (NYSE DOW) all across the United States. For example, in 2005 Dow Texas gave away over $180,000 in grants for the CAP program. If you just Google the search query, “DOW Chemical Company Gives Grants to Local Non-Profit Businesses”, you will see hundreds of similar donations made by Dow. Other notable charity events by Dow include a donation of over $100,000 to Twin Cities nonprofit organizations. This time it was Dow Water Solutions, based in Edina, Minn. that was making the generous contribution.

Dow is taking a different approach to philanthropy with this program. By focusing on local areas surrounding Dow facilities the business has a significant impact into the local community. This local approach accompanied with a national combined effort has seen a great penetration into the immediate community. Since Dow focuses on all non-profit organizations they are allowed a huge amount of freedom in deciding how to allocate funds.
